I have no idea how long my FEP will last, since this is my first resin printer. And considering the long lead times when it comes to getting parts, I figured I'd order some now. Anyone have any thoughts on some good fep that can be ordered on Amazon?

Lee Fletcher

I bought a couple of spare Anycubic ones when I got my printer last July. Screwed up the first print and cleanup as I had no idea what I was doing, so replaced the FEP for my second print. It has lasted me all this time and still going strong. ? Maybe 5L of prints put through it since then.

Chris Robinson
2020-03-31 01:38:43

I guess you got that off their site? Amazon doesn't seem to sell that brand, and I dont' know the specs for the film.

Lee Fletcher
2020-03-31 01:39:46

Yeah it was off Amazon, but like I say, back in July. https://www.amazon.co.uk/....../B07DMFKTJ4/ref=sr_1_2......

Stefan Giudici

I buy almost everything on Amazon... Except fep. Better deals elsewhere. I recommend getting a 5 foot roll from flexvat.Com

Josh Berkley
2020-03-31 02:01:16

I agree with getting a roll. May seem like a lot at first but you'll get addicted don't worry ?

Brian Beggs
2020-03-31 03:43:16

I use a roll from here: https://www.mcmaster.com/fep-film

Clifford Schwankner
2020-03-31 04:07:00

Brian Beggs nice! But there are just 3 thicknesses.. What do you order and how is it? .004 is only .1016mm. .15 to .20 mm is the best....

Brian Beggs
2020-03-31 04:09:42

I ordered this last time: Clear Slippery High-Temperature FEP Film 24" Wide X 0.005" Thick, 2 ft. Length

Brian Beggs
2020-03-31 04:10:18

A sheet of this has been on my photon for about 6 months now, still looks good. Might change it soon as I got a bunch of new resin in... but I may just lazy out and leave it in there.

Could use a bit of help. Which of these three version do you think is the most likely to end with the best result (meaning it will print, and the cleanup won't destroy most of the model)? The tilted, the flat or the vertical? Each was run through Photon verifier and the supports are about 95% manual (and light) using Chitubox . Thanks!

Tilted is normally the best in my experience...

Chris Robinson
2020-03-30 05:09:23

I thought so too and that was the first one I did, but there were so MANY supports!

Sander van Deijl
2020-03-30 05:13:00

Tilted but less tilted than that? And try to avoid putting supports on the model itself, only support from the buildplate

Josh Berkley
2020-03-30 05:23:01

If it had a base I'd say print it straight up. NEVER print anything flat like your second picture. It almost never works especially for a big model like that. Too much surface area at once will certainly tear from supports. If you end up printing strai ght up and down (my recommendation) there is no reason to float the model. The bottom of her feet will end up warped from that flat area trying to cure all at once, again too much surface area. I'd put her feet on the bed.

Mark Wardle
2020-03-30 05:31:53

do you have a link to the stl i will set the model for you if you wish

Jolene Sweeney
2020-03-30 05:37:27

I know it looks like it but it's not that bad. But if I'm being honest I prefer pursa supporta....

Garrett Chapman
2020-03-30 06:15:58

I've found that angled works best, leaning backwards. I printed a miniature leaning forward once, and the support contact points just melted any detail in the area.

Oksana Shevchenko
2020-03-30 06:35:21

Josh Berkley I print stuff flat, works great.

Robin Blair
2020-03-30 07:11:26

I'd tilt it slightly, and turn it upside down. Less support between the legs etc. Remember you have more detail in the vertical direction, so flat should be avoided if you want as much detail as possible.

Avoid Supports from model

I'm still pretty new at this. I've only support probably 4 models, and they came out well. But I want to print some items that are like chests for D&D and I'm wondering about hollowing. I use ChiTuBox which, since I do mostly manual supports, has worked great. But I've never tried hollowing out a model because I haven't needed to. How big does an item need to be before you should really hollow the thing out?

翻譯年糕

Hugh Jeriolas
2020-03-28 23:40:26

I normally don’t hollow stuff unless I’m printing big monsters.

Richard Humble
2020-03-28 23:41:20

I hollow pretty much everything that can be. 1mm to 1.5mm thick. As big a drain hole as you can

Richard Humble
2020-03-28 23:41:45

All hollow

Chris Robinson
2020-03-28 23:54:04

See, that's the kind of thing I'm talking about. Because I'm not really sure you'd need it solid. Is it hard to hollow those out?

Andrew Goins
2020-03-29 00:28:58

Chris Robinson hollowing is easy. Supporting all the new islands that can be created internally - that's a bit more fun.

Richard Humble
2020-03-29 01:15:56

No islands. Just thicken up the shell until they vanish.

Nathan Kopp
2020-03-29 12:36:44

found crates and barrels needed to be 0.02 thick to be worth hollowing. also make a large drain hole. i mean a large one or you will be draining forever and making a big mess

Richard Humble
2020-03-29 16:47:12

Nathan Kopp mine are 1mm walls, strong enough for terrain but not for stuff that gets handled a lot

Nathan Kopp
2020-03-29 23:01:40

Richard Humble ballsy man i couldn't do that thin

Richard Humble
2020-03-29 23:48:56

Nathan Kopp ? I print most things at 1.5mm. Plenty strong. 1mm is still strong enough but not for regular handling.

Nathan Kopp
2020-03-30 00:11:06

depends on the size for me. its 2 to 3mm. i need my stuff to be able to take a fall or so.

Richard Humble
2020-03-30 01:06:04

This stuff is so light it will take it fine

What's the best way to add resin to the tank during a print. Never had to yet, but I might have to on my next print. Is there a way to pause?

翻譯年糕

Jason Goldsmith
2020-03-21 20:04:47

Yes, there is a pause button on the touch screen when it's printing. Pause and top up if you need to. Done it before, no impact on the print.

Scott Pavlich
2020-03-21 20:05:58

I just add it as soon as the light goes off...you have about 6 sec between to dump some in but you can use the pause button as well

Brandon Geiter
2020-03-21 20:06:06

Pour gently on the sloped build plate while stationary.

Brandon Geiter
2020-03-21 20:06:34

What I do anyway

罗西晟
2020-03-22 01:38:42

Don't forget, that the resin in the VAT during printing will most likely have a higher temperature than the one in your bottle, and when you add from the bottle the temperature in the VAT will drop and you will see that as a line on your print.

Dan Andersson
2020-03-22 01:39:49

The line comes from pausing your print. If you just pour the resin in, it is not a problem.

罗西晟
2020-03-22 01:41:15

Dan Andersson Odd, I have paused several prints and never saw a line... only the ones I paused to add resin had a line, usually where I added resin.

Then again, my environment is ~20C, temperature in bottle ~19 to 21C and in the VAT its at ~30C (checked with FLIR)

Dan Andersson
2020-03-22 03:58:34

Strange. I get the line every time i pause. Regardless if i fill or not

Jason Goldsmith
2020-03-22 04:55:17

I've not had the line problem either when pausing a print. My printer is outside under cover, must of my printing had been in summer where temperature rarely drops below 20°c. Maybe that plays a part.

Is there a way in ChiTubox to save a supported model as an stl but then still go back and be able to edit the supports AS supports?

翻譯年糕

Stuart Johnson
2020-03-21 09:30:18

No. The stl format is pretty limited and contains no metadata to define what is support, original mesh etc.

Much like how gcode won't allow you to produce a mesh - its simply a series of move instructions.

Chris Robinson
2020-03-21 09:30:55

Ah well. That makes things... difficult.

Stuart Johnson
2020-03-21 09:31:54

Your best bet...probably...is to use meshmixer to poke about with the mesh.

Chris Sawtelle
2020-03-21 09:45:40

Go to the 3 lines at the top left and save as a project. That should let you reopen it and work on it. Then just slice and save the STL when you need to print.

Geren W Mortensen Jr
2020-03-21 11:22:38

You can save the model as a project with supports, and then come back and edit that.

Merv Hinton
2020-03-21 15:00:39

+1 for all the above..I try to keep the original pure 'blueprint' in Projects, rework it if I need to then when diced and sliced export it to a 'ready to print' file..try to maintain a sequence / filing system...

So I went through and did the supports on first mini and it came out pretty good. Ran it through the File Validator and it printed nicely. However, it was sliced with the Grey Resin settings and now I'd like to print it using translucent -- which has different settings. Is there some way I can change those settings and save a new .photon file for the different resin? I did save the final supported STL file, but don't want to have to redo work. Thanks!

Sam Griffiths

If you start the print, you can change the settings on the printer itself. Just press the cog icon and adjust the timings.

Jason Pedersen
2020-03-21 09:16:27

Sam Griffiths was unaware of this. Good to know.

Jason Pedersen
2020-03-21 09:17:03

I was unaware of the above, always just ran the validated file again and adjusted settings on the save screen.

Edit: I mainly use the plastic scraper that came with it, but I'm afraid that's gonna wear out at some point so I wanted to try something else.

I used a metal scraper to get part of one print off. I didn't realize the plate was so soft and I hope this isn't going to screw up future prints.

我用金屬刮器把一個列印的一部分拿下來. 我沒有意識到盤子這麼柔軟, 希望這不會搞砸未來的指紋.

So my last print ended up like this. No idea why, of course, so if people have any ideas, please let me know. The print before was fine, but it wasn't printing on that part of the plate, so who knows. It's odd that the raft bit stuck, but then the supports just... faded? Dunno.
