My photon was at the point where every single print would fail with a USB read error, even on new drives of a known-good model. I finally got around to disassembling the unit and noticed that my USB port was off-center and its shielding was touching the photon's outer case. Some quick electrical tape around the case opening and I'm back to printing*.
*During my first print after taping, half of the LCD went out; but this was resolved with a firmware update. Is there a connection? Who knows...
While I had the case open, I noticed that the USB port is pretty close to what I think is the power regulator for the UV light source. I didn't get a good look at the component, but there are some inductors on it right next to the USB port and I expect it's putting out some interference. I plan to do some proper testing and to maybe add shielding when I get the time, but I'm posting here now to gauge others' experiences and to see if anyone else sees an improvement from the tape. Does the EMF + grounding theory sound plausible to anyone else?
