So this is huge. Does the FEP make a difference. Yes. Actually Non-FEP makes a huge difference. This hack is the best thing I have come across in a while. While testing resin on the Epax and Photon S. I got a failure on the Photon S so I decided to investigate the Non-Fep on the Epax. Here are the results. Epax Non FEP - perfect print. Aftermarket FEP (amazon) - failure. Photon S FEP - Failure. You can get this Non FEP here. I have no idea what its made from but the Epax folks claim it lasts longer as well. It will work with Epax, Photon, Photon S and Shuffle printers. The print results are more dimensionally accurate. All films used in testing were brand new and tested on the same Photon S printer with the same resin and print file. Enjoy.

Sorry about the second post. Here is a better review. Photon S first test prints. 6 surgical guides in 1 hour 15 minutes. The para LED array works. Every guide printed with small easy to remove supports. They all fit perfectly. Nextdent SG 100 micron layers. First impressions. Printer is built cheaply - plastic sides. Doesn't affect performance and actually makes the printer quieter. Very light though. Be careful not to tip it over. Maybe add some weights to it. Much improved Z axis with no wobble. Printer is slightly faster due to less time between layers. Software is a step back and has no preset configuration settings but otherwise similar to the previous Anycubic slicer. They apparently developed the software from scratch and I am sure they will fix those issues. The workflow is still the same - writing to a flash drive and printing from flash drive without connecting the actual printer to the computer. Touch Screen is smaller ? but much brighter, clearer and easier to read. Time will tell but I expect the performance to be similar to the Shuffle. All previous Photon parts (Vats, FEP, tools etc) will still work. Still easy to teach an assistant to do. We will need to work out new setting for resins. Had this up an running in about 20 minutes as the setup is the same as the previous Photon. Not bad for $479 including shipping. More to come. Stay tuned.

First Photon S tests. Can you really print accurate surgical guides, models, temps etc. on a $480 3D printer. Yes. Here is the Nextdent SG profile for the new improved Photon S. Bottom line This printer rocks. You can use the entire build plate and its much faster due to the stronger LED array. With this profile I printed these 5 surgical guides in 58 minutes (about 35 percent faster than the Phrozen Shuffle). Every guide printed perfectly, fit the model perfectly and the sleeves fit.

For those that have set up a charcoal filtration system for the photon or shuffle such as the one I posted about a year ago here is a hack to replace the charcoal cheaply. After 1 year the charcoal was not filtering the resin odor anymore. This took 20 minutes.

Remove the 3 screws at the top of the canister.
Carefully remove the metal top (the metal is sharp)
Clip around the rivets holding the mesh screen to the plastic ring.
Remove the black plastic ring.
Unfurl the nylon
Dump the old charcoal out being careful not to dislodge the inner metal mesh ring.
Fill with new charcoal.
Replace the nylon over the top.
Replace the plastic ring
Replace the metal cover and the 3 screws.
Done

Replacement charcoal can be found here. It takes 5 pounds of charcoal to refill the canister. https://www.amazon.com/…/…/ref=oh_aui_search_bia_detailpage…

Vinicius Silva asked me to post this automatic heating solution. Warning - This requires cutting wires, drilling and some knowledge of electronics. Get someone to help you if you don't have this experience. The heating elements are self adhesive and are attached to adhesive side of the magnetic tape and then magnetically attach to additional magnetic tape on the Vat so the Vat can easily be removed. 1 heating element may work but the vat heats up quicker with 2. Each heating element is 12 watts. 2 heating elements will only draw 2 amps so the 6 amp power supply is more than adequate. Warning -The strips get very hot and can burn your fingers so make sure to let them cool down before removing the vat if you need to. The temp sensor is held in a wire holder made from a large paper clip which is then screwed down with the existing screw that acts as a vat stop. Note the angle of the holder. It allows the vat to be placed so that the temp sensor is in intimate contact with the Vat. I have found this placement of the sensor to be good for regulating the temp The aluminium vat is a good heat conductor and will transfer the heat very well to the resin. Set the temp to 31 degrees Celsius as I have found this is a good temp for dental resins. Make sure the heating element is attached to the vat before plugging it in as it gets very hot. The power supply for the heating element is plugged in to the temp controller and will cycle on and off when plugged in. Very important - Do not leave this on unattended. I actually recommend plugging the Photon and the temp controller into a power strip and turning both off when finished printing or whenever the vat is removed. Heavy duty mounting tape used to attach the hardware to the back of the photon. I assume no responsibility - use at your own risk. It is low voltage but I don't know everyone's skill and knowledge level. Total build time about 1.5 hours. A list of parts and Amazon links is below. Oh. one more thing. I built this while wearing the t-shirt in the last picture. Enjoy.

Several people have asked me about printing the magnetic storage box for them. If anyone wants the box with the USB extender and magnets already installed please PM me. We will send it to you for $35 including shipping in the US. PM me for ordering. No assembly required - it just attaches with the magnets and plugs into the side USB port.

Updated magnetic storage box with a space for the USB extension to bring the USB socket to the front. Look in the files section. If you leave the magnets protruding from the box slightly it sticks better to the side panel of the printer. Glue the magnets and USB extender into the box with a hot glue gun. This is best printed with a FDM printer. Enjoy.

Not directly Photon related. Here is a new chin rest design I made for the dual scan technique on the Carestream CS8100. It allows the scanning of both jaws with both upper and lower dentures (with radiographic markers) without cutting off the lower part of the mandible (picture 1). The original chin rest is picture 4. I raised the chin rest 1.5 cm to capture both arches in the same scan. It could also be use just for just the lower jaw. By using the chin rest the patient can bite into and seat the dentures properly. I had previously posted a chin rest for using impressions as scan appliances. If anyone wants either chin rest designs to 3D print please email me at drferguson@aol.com. I will gladly share them.
