What did you used to scan? And what powder used?

Mike Tongue
2019-04-05 19:58:32

Can I get the STL please ?

That looks great!

Brad Dudenhoffer

Minolta Vi-910 - talcum powder.

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-05 20:38:54

Fraid not mate - it's still technically the property of the film company. Then there's the SFX company that paid me to scan it. ;)

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-05 20:39:57

See answer above, mate. All data that I've scanned is still technically the property of various production companies and film studios and thus not for general release.

2019-04-05 21:32:34

Very cool! I've been collecting reference to make my own forever. What size was the maquette you scanned? I know Harryhausen did a lifesize Bubo and then a few other scales.

Tiffany Jeanne Vincent
2019-04-05 21:34:16

Also, can you recommend a cheap entry-level scanner for newbs? I volunteer at our local makerspace and am asked constantly if we have one.

3D Scanning Guy

Tiffany Jeanne Vincent life sized. I scanned the actual mechanical owl ?

Mike Tongue

I hope the price of scanners comes down soon.

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-05 23:09:10

You can get really good results with a phone camera and a £10 month's licence of Reality Capture in a Steam sale ;)

Mike Tongue
2019-04-05 23:10:07

3D Scanning Guy I’ll look up Reality Capture

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-05 23:10:58

To be honest most of the cheap bespoke scanners aren't very good (like the Kinect solution). You really have to think about paying over $1000 for something? However, the best value option is to use Reality Capture, which is available on Steam (in the s ale it's about £10 for a month licence) and just use any camera above about 6MP. Just have nice in-focus images and nice diffuse lighting and you should get really good results.

Christian Sargent
2019-04-05 23:21:01

You can give it away but not for money . You cant sell it.

3D Scanning Guy Holy crap . .it's now £30 a month !

Tiffany Jeanne Vincent

Perfect! And that's a solution I can show the kids that come in to 3D print!

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-06 05:39:18

Christian - Todd is correct, plus it would be pretty unethical, not to mention professionally suicidal. But apart from that... ?

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-06 05:40:22

Yeah, it pretty much got me into VFX as a kid. Ray Harryhausen was my absolute hero.

2019-04-04 00:29:59

Kory Sebby An obsolete 10 year old Artec MHT (now superseded by the Eva) that I carted around Europe and the UK or World War Z, scanning zombies!

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-04 00:31:06

Mark Wardle Couple of grand now its 10yo and obsolete (maybe less?). Was maybe £7500 new?

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-04 00:32:42

Chris Yarrow The detail is consistent, but shows up way less on the grey ones. Really needs a zenithal spray like the middle one or a dry brush to make it pop (like the middle one.)

Mark Wardle
2019-04-04 00:56:50

2019-04-04 11:01:38

How big do the scan files come out to?

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-04 16:39:17

Whatever size you want - the deal with scanning has always been that you always have too much data, and decimate it to the largest size you're comfortable working with.

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-04 16:41:27

This system is 10 years old ;) To be honest in terms of the data scanning hasn't really changed at all in 25 years - this was my first ever commercial head scan, 23 years ago (eek!). Bjork for the Hunter video...

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-04 16:42:48

Hong Phong Nguyen The MHT or the Eva? The former is hard to get hold of, but would probably set you back about $2K? The latter is probably nearer $5K used, $8K-$10K new.

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-04 16:43:10

Damir Dalila Suljević What's your budget?

Zachary Koterba
2019-04-05 02:06:36

Wow, that's pretty awesome. You seem to know your scanning stuff. What would you recommend for a budget scanner? Or even better, a kit/build your own?

Mark Wardle
2019-04-05 02:29:06

well for basic scanning of people you could use the kinect 1. if using a pc make sure you have the powerpack version of the kinect 1. that's the cheap way. or use photogrammetry using Recap Pro it has Recap Photo. awesome software. free. or you could b uy a hand scanner costing above 5k or you could use the shining einscan se on a tripod capturing scans at a time then building them together. cost is about 1.2k main problems with scanning the subject is them standing or sitting still. so the longer the scans the more chance for errors with the model. again depending on the scanner. but again i have seen awesome photogrammetry scans setups using loads of cams all setup to take the photos all in one go. but that would be a costly setup.

Mark Wardle
2019-04-05 02:30:43

dont bother with any laser scanners like the cowtech 2 laser setup. not easy for a new user. scans are made with point clouds that need to be converted into a mesh. avoid. avoid. you just wasting money

Zachary Koterba
2019-04-05 02:30:51

Mark Wardle awesome. Thanks for the info. Will def have to look around. Awesome work by the way!

Zachary Koterba
2019-04-05 02:31:09

Mark Wardle haha. Good to know

Damir Dalila Suljević
2019-04-05 02:31:55

3D Scanning Guy let s say under 500€. But i am open for geek solutions too. Something like 2 cellphones on a jig

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-05 06:32:33

What are you looking to scan? What's your budget?

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-05 06:44:42

Absolute budget basement cost vs performance is probably Reality Capture. It's a piece of photogrammetry software that you can get on Steam on a month'[s licence for about $10 (in a Steam sale - $30 usually - just add it to your wishlist for knowing wh en a sale is on.) You may wonder why you'd want just one month's licence? Just take a crapload of photos and then process them all in the one month you have until you next need it. Believe me, that's a LOT of models you can produce.
That said you'll need to haunt photogrammetry forums to know how to get the best results, but tbh that's the same with any scanning solution. There's no magic bullet.
You can photogrammetry people with one camera - you just need to a) get them to sit really still (or support their head/scan them lying down) and b) be prepared to do a lot of editing - but again that's par for the course with ANY scanning - you HAVE to learn how to edit polygons, but there's plenty of good free software around these days (MeshLabs, Meshmixer etc.)
Kinect is a reasonably cheap way to go if you want to scan low resolution people or small environments, but the quality really isn't that great. It's fine if you want to leave textures on and do a colour print, but not for Photon level stuff - unless you intend to scale it down REALY small!
You can pick up some pretty cheap (i.e. $1000) Minolta Vivid laser scanners. They're old but come with three lenses, are easy to use and can scan a whole variety of things - even people! But again you HAVE to know how to edit and sculpt polys if you want to be able to use a system like this for people. But I scanned these guys using just that set-up, so it IS possible - and cheap... ish! Just just have to have a lot of practice ;)

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-05 06:48:12

"still scans well. so defo not old" - that's basically me ?

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-05 06:52:02

Damir Dalila Suljević In that case get yourself some cheap either Nikon D3200/D5200 with the bog standard cheapo 50mm nikon lens or some cheap Canons (I'm a Nikon man myself though!). As many as you can get for your budget. Then just rig them up on a t ripod/light stand to all point at the subject at diffrerent levels... and walk around it. Feed the images into Reality Capture (on Steam - wait for the sale when it's £10 for a month's licence), and hey presto. You'll still need to know your stuff editing the polys, but that's the best way. Personally with $500 I'd get a single Nikon D7100 and the cheap 50mm (may be cheap but it's sharp as a knife), and just shoot with that.

Zachary Koterba
2019-04-05 07:20:09

3D Scanning Guy so mostly miniatures and small things and after buying multiple printers and gear I have a very slim budget. Haha. But like scanning symbols and jewelry for embossing. Etc.

3D Scanning Guy
2019-04-05 07:33:09

Zachary Koterba Miniatures is kind of unique - if you want to do it with photogrammetry then you'll need to invest in some focus stacking software - when you go macro it's hard to get depth of field and that's crucial with good photogrammetry results. But that's still your best bet - I'd go for a Nikon D7100 and the Nikkor 40mm Micro/Macro - it's a fiddly macro lens cos you have to get real close, but it's got hardly any distortion on the lens. You're looking at maybe $500 for that setup (buy used). Use a ring flash or ring flash attachment to a Speedlight. But you HAVE to do focus stacking. You're better off scanning/photoing bigger stuff and then shrinking it to miniature size ;)
The other option is jewellery scanners and stuff like the Artec Spider but you need REAL deep pockets that that kind of kit! ($10K+) but it's the best for doing minis. You can rent a Spider for about $250/$300 per day.

Anycubic made an announcement March 11th, then it was removed a few days later after negative community feedback.

This is a great reaction from AnyCubic.
Reading the PIS from March 11th I did see why Vinicius Silva posted the open letter. On the other hand, we also have to see this from AnyCubis's side.
Let's say I install a new non-original speedometer in my car and then start posting all my speeding tickets on FB because it reports lower than actual speeds. Before you know, this message gets shared around the world - neglecting the fact that I was the one creating the problem ...

Keep your users happy and you will continue to have a powerful set of products.

For me, AA is absolutely key. I understand that you want to push the Photon S but please don’t do it to the detriment of your existing products. W love to ‘tinker’ but understand that we will void our warranty.

If you could offer upgrades or mods for your existing printers then I have no doubt that you would get some strong sales.

This is very positive, although it is definitely the result of community pressure, it would be nice if Anycubic was more pro-active in that sense and listen more to their members who are passionate and big supporters of your brand, this would be a win- win scenario, especially in these times where other brands start competing in the same area.
Your user base is invaluable and can help you keep that leading edge you need against other brands, communication is everything.

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-15 20:35:08

It's not just that. It was also the design choices they made on their new photon-s.

For about the same money they could have built a much better printer if they had listened to the collective advice that grew from the methodically investigation curation and verification done by the photonsters on the information shared on this group.

That and the fact that by having a new Photon-S that is not compatible with the old files, they have just thrown away more than a years worth of Free, No strings attached, Open Source research.

We are in it for the improvement of the community and challenging the status quo of the industry, not for fame and fortune. You can confirm this by reading our default license here:
https://github.com/....../PhotonstersDefaultLicense/LICENSE

-------------

Personally I'm very happy that they had the courage to admit to their mistake and retract their PIS

Now I just hope that they back James words with coherent
actions.

Namely, open up their Photon-S file format to the photonsters so we can port the open software and support new users.

Tools like Resin Exposure Finder and the Validator have become standards for the Photon Classic users

Amy Liao make sure this reply get's to James Please.

I think you need someone fluent and conversant in both Chinese and English to make sure the intended message is delivered after translation to English.

Jonathan Weinberg
2019-03-15 21:03:33

I hope the community remembers humility works both ways.

And this is why I just rolled my eyes at the fuss. Without a doubt, it should have been made, if it wasn’t, AC wouldn’t have probably realized how it could easily come across.

Jonathan Weinberg
2019-03-15 21:04:41

Amy Liao or someone to at least read major statements and give a view of how they might be perceived. I volunteer:)

Chris Griffin
2019-03-15 21:39:23

What did they do or say?

Alex Varley
2019-03-15 21:41:29

They tried to remind people that installing aftermarket parts would cause customers to lose warranty. It came across as a threat of legal action. Translation between Chinese and English is not simple or literal.

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-15 21:42:07

check the link posted by senkun above, we kept a copy in the group open letter to anycubic

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-15 21:46:15

Am I correct to read into your comment that you a
think the community is not being humble. Please clarify Master

Jay Starling
2019-03-15 22:00:03

Vinicius Silva they didn't open up the photon file format either. If I remember correctly you had to have a hacker team reverse engineer it and then it was posted on GitHub. Do I remember correctly?

Jonathan Weinberg
2019-03-15 22:08:22

something along the lines of “legal action” if using non-AC parts. From their perspective, “we aren’t going to fulfill warranty claims after you “re-engineer” things and then it doesn’t work and you want free new parts”. But some folks took it as “They will sue me.”...

Alex Varley
2019-03-15 22:09:09

Vinicius Silva I had to read his post a few times myself. I believe that he means Anycubic have done the right thing and apologised and admitted that the legal action letter was totally wrong. In return we should accept that apology and return to being friends.

Jonathan Weinberg
2019-03-15 22:10:14

lol stop, this isn’t the only AC community. And you aren’t the only behavior to base a comment on.

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-15 22:14:26

Jonathan Weinberg Its easy to say the wrong thing, my question serves to clarify that you should always thrive for clarity and specifics in your answers Master. And besides you are answering about other ACs communities on a private AC community, not sp ecifying it is not about this one in particular!

Same mistake AC did, by posting a note on a Resin printer Community when the big issues where about "apparently" a FDM Printer

If one leaves too much up to interpretation people will find their own meanings in what you say
;)

Alex Varley
2019-03-15 22:16:11

Jonathan Weinberg which other community made a fuss about the legal threat letter?

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-15 22:43:59

Jay Starling Yes correct we did reverse the code, and also supported Anycubic by flagging the Intelectual Property infringement commited by Formware, a paid software, when they implemented our export research into a unauthorized export to photon function on their software.

Anycubic stood by our side then, and for that reason earned our trust enough for the group admins to add them to the admins too.

Jay Starling
2019-03-15 22:48:16

Vinicius Silva but the Photon File format is not Anycubic's IP. It is just a CCDP file renamed. So that is the IP of ChiTu, correct?

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-15 22:52:25

Jay Starling Still both Anycubic and CBD supported us against back then. The truth is that they should have kept the new Photon-S with backwards compatibility. Epax and Orbeat for example can print .photon files and use the tools made available by the community that way

Jay Starling
2019-03-15 22:55:01

Vinicius Silva I thought the file format couldn't handle AA? Or is that the firmware didn't recognize it?

Alex Varley

Ryan Cook

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-15 23:34:33

Jay Starling .Photon cannot handle AA, but you don't need AA for most things, Photon S must support Photon Files ideally, since all the competition can, and makes no sense their own machines do not support their own files.

By the way AA will be good f or particular applications and comes at a cost of slicing time.

PhotonS new file dosen't come with AA either, at least not the version that comes out from Chitubox

AA is working on the Photon by using the EPAX firmware, but we do not recoment this mod. The epax firmware not only adds AA but also runs the old .photon file format

Rob Jansen
2019-03-15 23:57:25

Vinicius Silva , the letter from Anycubic states "There will be anti-aliasing (AA) function on both standard PHOTON and the new PHOTON-S by firmware upgrade. We are doing the final test and will release it really soon in weeks"
So you are right, it cannot handle AA but according to Anycubic themselves state new firmware will be able to handle this.

Jay Starling
2019-03-16 00:05:31

Rob Jansen there will probably be a new file format that will.

Orwin SantaCruz
2019-03-16 04:13:41

This sure seems like a lot of fuss over nothing. Seriously, who was upset by this. They recommended using official parts and if you didn’t and tried to cause harm to their reputation based on your unofficial mods, they MAY pursue legal action....like any company would. So tinker away but they won’t support you and if you screw up, don’t trash talk Anycubic who asked you not to do that. Where’s the issue here?

Alex Varley
2019-03-16 04:15:14

It's a lot more complex than that which is why they apologised. I'm not going through it again but the previous 100 comments will shed light on it

Nick Williams
2019-03-16 04:17:12

Orwin much much more than that. We ARE the company. To shove such a cold statement into our mouths after releasing the photon successor no one asked for, is suicide. We don’t get paid for the work we do, and quite frankly we’re a good reason people even buy the machines.

Alex Varley
2019-03-16 04:18:12

Worst of all they milled the blue off the build platform. Unforgiveable.

Orwin SantaCruz
2019-03-16 04:21:57

Nick Williams guess I didn’t see it that way. I don’t really care about the S either so instead of making 100 posts bitching that it’s plastic, I just don’t buy it which is more effective in my opinion. If they release something better, great. If not, my machine is working fine.

Nick Williams
2019-03-16 04:24:48

Orwin , really it’s not the plastic. That’s the point a lot of onlookers make.

It’s the lack of AA.
The lack of larger build area.
The lack of features that we’ve asked for as a community.

Plastic is the least of my concern. Yea, you’re right. Don’t buy it. Or, make a fuss and let them see that we want something different and WILL pay for it.

Alex Varley
2019-03-16 04:25:47

Nick Williams I can cope with the plastic but not the lack of blue. This is a sop for the sand people.

Orwin SantaCruz
2019-03-16 04:29:22

Nick Williams I would think all the posts asking about bigger machines and kickstarters for larger, self leveling etc machines does that just fine. If they don’t get the point, fuck em. It’s not like we’re tied down to them for any reason.

Nick Williams
2019-03-16 04:30:30

Orwin SantaCruz oh lord. Self leveling. In my day you had to LEVEL BY HAND. BOTH WAYS. IN THE FUCKING SNOW

Nick Williams
2019-03-16 04:30:42

Alex YOUR GOD HAS FORSAKEN YOU.

Alex Varley
2019-03-16 04:31:30

Orwin SantaCruz Some people have put hundreds of hours into writing software to improve the photon, been unpaid support for it. The new model doesn't support any of the test files and exposure finders etc that have been created nor the validator. Those people feel invested and let down.

Orwin SantaCruz
2019-03-16 04:38:30

Nick Williams if they got self leveling down, we’d have less than half the posts we see now! Next, they’d need to make a castable resin called “the best castable resin” so when people ask (again) we can literally send a link saying “this is the best castable resin”.

Nick Williams
2019-03-16 04:40:19

Orwin oh my god that would be hilarious. “what are the best settings?”

The coating has zero effect on adhesion.

Martin Souček
2019-03-19 17:39:59

WTF? AA even on the standard Photon? Is this for real? I know its HW is capable of it - every LCD can display pixels with varying intensity, but I really didn't hope for the FW upgrade...

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-19 18:06:37

it is real and not the way you think of it check photonsters youtube channel we posted a working demo with a epax firmware running on a photon board

Martin Souček
2019-03-19 18:22:22

Vinicius Silva Heh that's interesting. The official upgrade will use this approach?

Beat Grendelmeier
2019-03-19 19:57:36

Alex Varley bullshit! Do your homework. I have two resins here that simply don't work with a coated buildplate, confirmed by the manufacturer.

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-19 21:05:45

Beat Grendelmeier its not coated Master, it's anodized, and these types of hoaxes where spread by resin sellers. The real issue was non flat plates

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-19 21:07:07

Martin Souček for the Classic, yes, for the Photon S only god and anycubic knows, its a different board and apparently they severed relations with chitubox for the S model

Beat Grendelmeier
2019-03-19 22:57:14

Vinicius Silva : anodizing is a form of coating. it also changes the microscopic texture of the surface.
i'm sorry, but your information is wrong.

Keith Barnett
2019-03-19 23:08:44

YET.. my photon has NO issues printing with the Annodized plate?????

if it were the "coating" that is causing the problem,, EVERYONE would have the problem. but as you know.. they don't.

there is nothing wrong with the coating, it works fine. thousands and thousands of people are printing just fine with annodized build plates.

i've seen what happens to unprotected bare aluminum after a long time. I definatley want mine annodized

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-19 23:33:23

Beat Grendelmeier Not this discussion again... lol

look on the group if you really want but i'll not go into further details, all tests showned that the anodization had nothing to do with the issues users where experiencing but in fact it was produced by a factory mishandling of the sandblaster

If the "Not Coating" anodization was the culprit all users would have failures even the ones that sanded their plate since aluminium anodizes itself as it gets older.

Sen Kun, Nick Williams

Nick Williams
2019-03-20 00:15:22

Beat hey!

This subject has been beat to death, and we finally killed it. I personally took a sanded and unsanded plate to check the porosity in the lab and there is MINIMAL difference.

The REAL problem is plates that aren’t flat. Check to see if yours is PERFECTLY flat.

Duke O Hazards
2019-03-20 00:34:14

Vinicius Silva Ouch, didn't know they severed relations with Chitubox. That might affect my decision on future units.

Vinicius Silva
2019-03-20 00:36:56

Duke O Hazards I dunno if they did, The fact is that They have a new board that is not Chitubox, a format that is not compatible with the old files and their own inhouse Slicer, so i'm basing my assumption on that

Sen Kun
2019-03-20 01:13:32

Hmm, "coated", "coating", the terminology sounds familiar and I can guess who this certain manufacturer is.

Lol maybe they should look into better formulations instead of pushing primers or instigating people to unnecessarily sand good build plates.

The only resins that need priming are speciality resins like Bluecast. And the only build plates that need sanding are warped or defective ones. Nothing to do with anodizing, and there's no such thing as coated build plates.

It's all about the formulation, and plate flatness.

Beat Grendelmeier
2019-03-20 04:07:52

i'm shure my plate was flater before i sanded it. i do however agree that the anodization together with the formulation is causing the problem, as i have resins that worked perfectly with the anodized surface.
has anyone of the people that claim it's not the anodisation printed black resins successfully, and if yes, what brands?

Nick Williams
2019-03-20 04:12:34
