I had to start a new rule in my house. While at work and ask my 24 YO daughter to see if the print is looking good, NOT to use the purple UV cat pee light to see.

Need some advice. Which orientation would yield the best looking model, upright or flat? I used auto supports just for illustration, I will be placing my own supports. For the "STL?" people: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3731860 翻譯年糕

Dan Kennedy

put it at a 15 to 45 degree angle

Josh Deane
2020-03-28 04:19:10

Upright at an angle. You don’t want supports on both sides.

Terry Hobbs
2020-03-28 04:20:55

Like this, for example?

Sean O'Hayer
2020-03-28 04:47:48

Terry Hobbs more straight up and down, slightly angled from there.

Dieter Bürgy
2020-03-28 05:16:05

This much support?

Terry Hobbs
2020-03-28 05:17:33

No, I just used auto supports to illustrate the idea. I will be placing my own when the time comes.

Milton Farfán Salazar
2020-03-28 08:10:34

Flat.....or 45° never right

Richard Humble
2020-03-28 23:56:32

I'd print it straight up. Minimise the supports

I learned my lesson about auto supports, they suck. I tried auto supports from Chitubox, Prusa slicer, and Photon workshop. All failed. Placed my own in Chitubox, worked like a charm. Lesson learned. Next!

I use a combination of Chitubox "auto-supports" and then a thorough examination of islands and manually-placed supports. Then the Photon File Validator

Tobi Altebaeumer
2020-03-18 03:39:54

I like prusa because I don't have time to muck about for an hour with each model.

I did have to beef up the default settings ever so slightly, and I always add a few supports manually in areas that I know will need it (usually leading edges), but I don't have the time or patience to place them all manually.
That being said, I think you do ultimately achieve better results placing them manually.

Omar Silva
2020-03-18 03:43:19

I do Prusa for auto-orientation and supports, then open in Chitubox and manually place supports where needed.

Tobi Altebaeumer
2020-03-18 03:45:38

Do you do a z-lift of 0 in chitu then? It would be nice to have access to some heavy supports...

Cory Dolbashian
2020-03-18 03:47:06

Prusa auto have worked perfectly for me IF, you also run the thing through photon validator and manually fix any islands

Omar Silva
2020-03-18 03:49:10

Yeah zero z-lift. I find that generally Prusa auto-supports do a good job at placing enough supports to handle the load of the model, so I just find any stray islands and put light supports where needed.

Christopher Barnes
2020-03-18 04:12:25

Omar Silva this is also what I do. Works great.

Evan Boone
2020-03-19 00:38:50

a healthy mix of auto with the file validator to get what auto missed is my approach. very few failures.

For the last few days my prints are sticking to my FEP instead of my plate. I've had my Photon for about 2 weeks, 2-3 prints per day. Is it possible that the FEP is stretched and needs to be retentioned? I do hear the familiar popping or thumping noises during plate lift. My plate is properly trammed to the screen.

2020-03-17 05:38:02

Yes, thats a possibility.
Empty the VAT and gently flick the FEP, should make a noise between 300 and 325Hz, is what the information on the web tells us. (use a spectrometer app on phone)

Tony Moger
2020-03-17 05:39:18

Yes always check the Fep. Usually a quarter turn on each is enough, unless you're down with the frequency freaks and choose that method.

I need some feedback. I printed this little guy for my wife (had to, it was part of the deal to get the printer). The front looks good, the back looks like any city after the blitzkrieg. Printed on his back, 100% light supports, hollowed and holed in chitubox. Holes are eyes and 2 in back. Sliced with Photon workshop. I ended up with some strange structures. They were long, thin, and flat and extended from the plate to his back. There are 2 examples on the left, upper quadrant. Resin is Elegoo water washable ceramic grey. Bottom exposure 60 secs, normal exposure 8 secs, layers 0.05 mm. I've watched videos, read articles, searched this forum. Lots of information, too much for me to take in all at once. I'm a learn from experience kind of guy.

So I'm running the RERF test using water washable resin for my very first resin print. Smart or stupid? What is the result if, say, my dog forgot to shake the bottle before pouring?

Anyone have any opinions about the water washable resins? Are they worth the extra cost? Are they just as easy/hard to use as the regular resins?

Just purchased the Photon, this being my first sla printer. Five years plus with fdm, so no stranger to 3d printing. I was hoping to get a few of you to give me your first experience with the Photon (or sla printing). I haven't looked at the faqs yet, getting there soon. When it arrives, I will scour this group (via search) for more answers.
